New Approach to Migrate Workflow into SharePoint Online - Automate Workflow Solution Creation - SPMT Feature

SharePoint migration is a continuous process in this business platform. Organization who are using SharePoint for a while need to start thinking at some day for migrating their data from lower version to upper version of SharePoint. Migration is one of the evitable project of most of the Organization.

Migrating from On-Premises to On-Premises like MOSS 2007 to SP2020, or SP2010 to SP2013/2016/2019 is one path, and there is another path which is from SP2010/2013/2016/2019 to SPO (SharePoint Online).

Content migration is the simple one rather than migrating content with custom application. Migration approach and the plan needs to be perfect for a successful migration.

Considering SP2010 or SP2013 or SP2016 environment, there must be workflow presence and it could be integrated with document library, or list or might be site itself. These workflows might be SharePoint Designer Workflow, or Out-Of the-Box workflow or workflow created by any tool like Nintex.

Converting existing workflow is not an easy task, many times, we need to redevelop similar workflow using Power Automate in SharePoint Online while migrating from any On-Premises platform. Sometimes, we need to configure Out-Of the-Box workflow of SPO. Converting custom workflow like Nintex workflow is tricky part and there are many limitations either on Nintex end or at SPO end or migration tool end we need to review. Practically, a percentage of effort is going to spend on these review activity and redevelopment effort.

Microsoft bring new feature through SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT), and we can now migrate:

  • SharePoint Server 2010 out of the box (OOTB) approval and collect feedback workflows to Power Automate.
  • List and library "out-of-box" (OOTB) approval workflows
  • Workflow definitions and associations

However, Workflows created with SharePoint Designer or SharePoint Server 2013 are currently not supported.

This is one of the great features and Microsoft help us to reduce our redevelopment effort here by automating workflow creation process through Power Automate. The steps are simple and below are three major steps:
  • Configure endpoints and Power Automate
  • Migrate workflows
  • Activate workflows

Very easy to work, just using couple of clicks you allow SPMT to scan your existing OOB workflow which resides at your On-premises server and then allow to build the Power Automate Solution to deploy the new converted workflow for SPO. Awesome!
